What it does
The Chart of Accounts is the master list of all accounts in your general ledger (assets, liabilities, income, expenses, equity). Customise account codes, names, types, and currencies. Archive unused accounts to keep things tidy.
How to use it
- Go to Accounts from the sidebar.
- Hover over any account to reveal edit (pencil) and archive icons.
- Click the pencil to edit code, name, type, or currency.
- Click archive to hide the account from daily use.
- Toggle Show Archived to view or restore archived accounts.
System accounts (cannot be archived)
These are required for core functionality and exist in every Blankitt tenant:
- Accounts Receivable / Accounts Payable
- Retained Earnings
- Sales Tax Payable (VAT control)
Auto-created accounts
A handful of accounts are created the first time you use the feature that needs them, so you don't trip over a "missing GL account" error on day one:
- Allowance for Doubtful Debts + Bad Debt Expense — created the first time you raise a specific or general bad-debt provision.
- Accumulated Depreciation + Depreciation Expense — created the first time you add a fixed asset.
- Disposal Proceeds — created when you first dispose of a fixed asset. Configurable in Settings → Accounting Policies if you want to route disposal proceeds to a different account.
You don't need to set these up manually. The feature creates them on demand using the next code in the appropriate range.
Tips
- Archiving does not delete transactions. All historical data is preserved.
- Use sector templates to bulk-add industry-specific accounts.
- Keep codes consistent (1000-series for assets, 2000-series for liabilities, 4000 for income, 5000+ for expenses) for cleaner reports.
- Review periodically and archive accounts no longer in use.
- Once a period is locked, you can still edit account names + codes but cannot delete an account that's referenced in locked-period transactions.
